Frost Seeding: What, When, Where, and How to Frost Seed

What Can You Frost Seed?

Perennial blends containing cool season species are the go to when it comes to frost seed. The blends that do best are those that have clovers, chicory, and/or alfalfa. Now in our case we also have the added benefit of being able to frost seed Show Time as it contains all perennial forb species. You want to avoid frost seeding warm season annual species such as brassicas, radish, turnips, and various grain species as typically temperatures will not be warm enough for a successful planting and for those that do grow will mature too quickly for the hunting season.

When Can You Frost Seed?

Frost seeding is the action of spreading a seed over the ground when temperatures begin to cause soil to expand and contract with the freezing and thawing cycles. When seed is spread on bare soil during this contraction the seeds are worked into the soil. This process is called "heaving". Typically this occurs when temperatures around 50 degrees during the day and around 25 degrees over the night time or when soil temperatures are just above the freezing point. For northern regions we typically see the best time being around March/April whereas the further south you go the time frame can certainly be sooner.

Where to Frost Seed?

There are many areas that work great for frost seeding on a property. The first of these is frost seeding a food plot that was an annual the previous year as typically these are relatively clean and weed free. The next would be to overseed logging roads or small plots that are in the woods. Frost seeding these early will allow for adequate growth before the canopy develops. Lastly, we recommend frost seeding existing perennial food plots to help thicken the current stand of plants which in turn increases the food plots lifespan.

How to Frost Seed?

To frost seed first select your favorite perennial mix such as Own the Season and Show Time. Determining the rate is the next step and typically frost seeding at ½ of the labeled rate is recommending on established fields whereas a full rate or even up to double rate is recommended for areas that will be newly established. After you determine your rate, start walking and spreading that seed….Mother Nature will do the rest.

SHOW TIME
Shade/Drought Tolerant Perennial Blend

If you are only going to plant one food plot, this is it! It grows where others won’t, is super long lasting and has double the antler-growing calcium of any clover plot on the market!

Show Time is our #1 selling food plot blend! Why? Because it is very shade and drought
tolerant and will, therefore, grow in less-than-ideal conditions where other food plots won’t!
Big bucks are harvested in transitional/kill plots, not big food plots and Show Time is the
ultimate kill plot blend. Show Time also provides your bucks with twice the antler-growing
calcium of any clover plot. Plant Show Time at field entrances, adjacent to tree stands or
anywhere you want that big buck to come. Show Time will also last a long time, especially if
you overseed.

  1. Chicory - Very drought tolerant; high in calcium for bigger antlers
  2. Plantain - Long-lasting perennial; hardy, drought tolerant; also a unique treat as no other blend has it
  3. Small Burnet - Drought tolerant, soil breaker, winter nutritious
  4. Alfalfa - High yield, high protein, high energy; digestible fiber

LOCATION: Full sun, partial sun (4-6 hours), shaded (2-4 hours)*
SOIL PREFERENCE: Well drained, moderately drained, low drainage, pH range: 5.50-7.0
DROUGHT TOLERANT: High
GENERAL FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATION: 300 lbs/acre 9-23-30, 50 lbs/acre 43-0-0
PLANTING DEPTH: 1/8"-1/4"
PLANTING DATES: North: April-June or August-September, Central: March-May or
August-October, South: March-May or September-October
*Note - For success in shaded areas, we recommend planting in spring before canopy
is developed with new leaf growth.
Plants 1/4 acre

OWN THE SEASON
Long-Lasting Perennial Clover-Plus Blend

High protein, high energy, minimum maintenance blend

Own The Season is designed to be your main food plot although it is also ideal for planting on trails, as a transition plot, around ponds for soil stabilization or as a burn break. The four clovers in Own The Season complement each other: the Frosty Berseem is an annual clover that grows fast so you quickly have a viable food plot, the Medium Red is a good summer clover and also provides lots of nitrogen to the soil, the Ladino Clover is what deer love most, and the Balansa Clover is the cold weather clover as it stays green in very cold weather and can tolerate temps down to -14°. We add Alfalfa as it offers energy (it has more energy than either corn or soybeans) and it stays green even under snow. And, we add Chicory as it is very high in calcium and very drought tolerant and a natural deer de-wormer.

Four Clovers (Plus Alfalfa and Chicory)

  1. Ladino Clover - A white clover that deer love; 3-5 year perennial
  2. Medium Red Clover - Lasts past cool season; 3 year perennial
  3. Frosty Berseem Clover - Fast growing annual; winter hardy
  4. Balansa Clover - The most cold tolerant clover (down to -14°)
  5. Alfalfa - Higher energy than beans; stays green under snow
  6. Chicory - High in calcium; very drought tolerant

LOCATION: Full sun, partial sun (4-6 hours)
SOIL PREFERENCE: Well drained, moderately drained, low drainage, pH range: 5.80-7.0
DROUGHT TOLERANT: Low to moderate
GENERAL FERTILIZER RECOMMENDATION: 300 lbs/acre 9-23-30
PLANTING DEPTH: 1/8"-1/4"
PLANTING DATES: North: April-June or August-September, Central: March-May or
